ISLE OF PALMS, South Carolina — What began as a routine day delivering food turned into a life-changing moment for a Venezuelan man who became a hero during a violent crash that could have ended in even greater tragedy.
Alberto was working as a delivery driver when he came upon a serious collision on the Isle of Palms Connector. Without hesitation, he ran toward the wrecked vehicles as one of them began to catch fire.
Speaking with Nuestro Estado, he described the moment that pushed him into action:
“I just felt the need to pull the kids out before the car caught fire… I felt in my heart that I had to do it because there were people in the car.”
Authorities say a 16-year-old driving a Ford F-150 was cited for reckless driving. The preliminary crash report indicates the teen crossed the center line and struck an oncoming vehicle head-on.
After the impact, the truck flipped onto its side and burst into flames. The driver of the other vehicle was trapped near the burning wreckage, while a third vehicle managed to tow that car away from the fire.
In total, three people were transported from the scene by EMS. Firefighters also had to use specialized rescue equipment to extricate the driver of one of the vehicles.
While emergency crews were still arriving, Alberto took immediate action—approaching a burning, smoke-filled vehicle to help those inside.
One of the occupants from the vehicle sent Alberto a message of gratitude saying:
“I just wanted to thank you for everything. You saved both our lives. God bless you”
His bravery came at a personal cost.
According to a GoFundMe campaign created by his cousin, Alberto suffered a serious laceration to his left forearm during the rescue. The injury will keep him out of work during his recovery, leaving him without the income he depends on to pay his bills.
“Anyone who knows Alberto knows he is humble, hardworking, and always willing to help others. He never sought recognition or attention. He simply saw people in danger and did what he believed was right,” the fundraiser states.
The family says the funds will go toward medical expenses, lost wages, and daily living costs while he heals.
